What is AI visibility?

AI visibility describes how a business appears and is represented in AI search and answer experiences. That can mean a brand mention, a link to a useful page or an explanation of what the business offers. ChatGPT web search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are examples of places where that discovery can happen.

For your business, the opportunity is to reach people who know their problem but do not yet know your name. Clear information can help them understand your expertise and arrive at a conversation better prepared. Being mentioned is only one part of that journey: an accurate explanation and a relevant next step matter too. Our separate SEO and GEO guide explains the terminology; here, we focus on reviewing and improving your website.

1. Start with a decision your customer needs to make

Choose one important service page and write down the decision it should help someone make. A company considering a custom CRM, for example, might need to decide whether its existing tools can be connected or whether a new application is justified.

Collect the questions your team hears in calls and emails: who is this suitable for, what is included, what affects the cost and what must the customer prepare? Use those questions to outline the page. Give a direct opening answer, then explain the conditions and trade-offs.

For the CRM example, describe when scattered customer records become a problem, which integrations you would review and when an existing product may be sufficient. This gives your team a useful brief for the rewrite.

2. Make your experience and claims inspectable

Replace broad promises with details a reader can assess. Explain the work involved, your responsibilities and the limits of the service. If a project illustrates your approach, state the starting situation, what was delivered and how any reported outcome was measured. Use client material only when you have permission to publish it.

A business without a published case study can still explain its process well. An example scope, a sample briefing or a comparison of implementation options can help. Identify hypothetical examples clearly.

Name the responsible author or organisation and link to sources for facts that need support. Review the page when your offer changes, a source becomes outdated or customers reveal a missing explanation. A meaningful update should improve what the reader can learn or decide.

3. Check access and platform preferences

Ask your technical team to check the chosen page for indexing restrictions, blocked crawlers and security challenges that prevent access. Important service information should be available as readable text. Confirm that internal links lead to the intended page and that its main address is consistent.

For Google, check indexing, snippet eligibility and the Search generative AI setting in Search Console. Inclusion is the default; a property can inherit its parent’s choice. Eligibility does not guarantee an appearance.

For ChatGPT, OAI-SearchBot serves search, while GPTBot concerns model training. Their controls are independent, so allowing search does not require allowing training. Check both crawl rules and firewall access for the search bot.

4. Connect a clear explanation to a useful next step

Compare your service page with the rest of the website. The business name, service area, offer and contact details should tell the same story. When a service changes, update supporting articles and links as well. If you use structured data, it should describe information visitors can actually see.

A reader may arrive directly on an article without visiting your homepage. Provide a relevant service link and explain what happens after an enquiry. On mobile, check that the text is comfortable to read and the contact route is easy to use. At Pixel Studio, these content, design and technical decisions form part of the same website review.

An eight-point AI visibility checklist

Open your selected page and work through these checks. For every unchecked item, note one specific change and the person responsible. Start with anything that blocks access or leaves a customer unable to understand the offer.

These checkmarks are temporary; your answers are not saved or sent. The checklist helps you review the page and does not guarantee inclusion in AI answers.

5. Measure Google visibility with the right report

Record a baseline before publishing changes: the page you are improving, its current visibility and the enquiries it receives. Keep brand mentions, source links, visits and enquiries as separate measures.

Search Console’s Generative AI performance report covers impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It offers page, country, device and date breakdowns. It is not a report of AI clicks, sales or visibility across every assistant.

Choose a review period that suits your traffic. Compare the same page and similar periods, then use the findings to decide what deserves attention. A movement in impressions is a starting point for investigation; it does not explain the cause on its own.

Read Bing citations alongside visits and enquiries

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows citations across supported Copilot, Bing and selected partner experiences. Its sampled, aggregated data includes cited pages and grounding phrases, which are not complete user questions. Citations do not represent clicks or rankings.

Alongside those observations, review identifiable AI referrals in your analytics and the enquiries they lead to. Referral information can be missing, so avoid assigning unexplained traffic to AI. A short “How did you find us?” question can add context.

Discuss enquiry quality with the people who handle it. Were visitors asking about the right service? Did they understand the scope? Those answers help connect visibility work to a business need.

Use manual checks to find problems worth fixing

Keep a small, stable list of questions that reflect real customer decisions. When checking an AI answer, record the platform, date, language, question and source link. Note whether your business was described accurately and whether the linked page answered the question.

Treat this as a set of observations. Responses can vary between sessions and users. A repeated misunderstanding is still useful: it may reveal an outdated page, an unclear service boundary or conflicting information that you can correct. Record the correction and review it later, without treating a subsequent change as proof of cause and effect.

Turn the review into one manageable improvement

Combine the checklist with your customer questions. Choose the most useful change: clarifying service scope, adding an example, correcting an access issue or improving the route to contact. Assign an owner, publish the improvement and record what changed.

For a conversation with Pixel Shield, bring the page address, your audience and three recurring customer questions. We can discuss a focused website review, with agreed work and a clear way to assess progress.

Frequently asked questions

Does my website need an llms.txt file?

Google says it does not use llms.txt for Search visibility or rankings. For another service, check its documented requirements before adding a file. Your first priority should be useful content that the intended search tools can access.

Do I need special AI markup or a fixed word count?

Google specifies neither special AI schema nor an ideal page length. Write enough to resolve the reader’s question. Use headings for navigation and any structured data to describe the page accurately.

Can I appear in ChatGPT search while blocking model training?

Yes. OpenAI documents separate controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. Your technical team can allow search crawling while disallowing training crawling. That choice enables access for search; it does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.

How quickly will AI visibility improve?

There is no reliable timetable for every website and platform. Access fixes and content improvements can be checked when delivered; visibility needs observation over time. Agree on what will be changed, what will be measured and when the findings will be reviewed.
